Yoshkar-Ola – the capital of Mari El

Yoshkar-Ola is the capital of the Republic of Mari El. The city is located on the banks of the river Small Kokshaga, inflow of Volga. Yoshkar-Ola was established as a military fortress in 1584, following the Russian conquest of the Mari region.
