The museum is located in a historical building built in 1837, which was intended for the physical and chemical laboratories of Kazan University. The creation of the museum dates back to 1863, when A.M. Butlerov appointed the first curator of the museum - pharmacist A.I. Loman, who served in it for more than twenty years. The museum has no usual showcases and stands - it is a memorial laboratory of the XIX century (the only one in the world), which includes Butler's auditorium, library (about 8000 items of storage), the laboratory itself, a hall where chemical preparations and laboratory equipment of the XIX-XX centuries are exhibited, as well as the office of the head of the laboratory (Butlerov's office). The building currently houses the A.M. Butlerov Chemical Institute of Kazan State University and the Museum of Kazan Chemical School.
